Frequently Asked Questions

Cavity Wall Queries

What is Cavity Wall insulation?

Cavity Wall Insulation is a blown fibre material injected into the cavity of your house.

How do I know if my house has a cavity?

Most stone properties and brick houses built prior to 1930 are unlikely to have a cavity. Alternatively, simply give us a call and we can arrange for one of our qualified surveyor’s to call. All new build properties will have cavities and will be fully insulated at the time of build.

Why is the cavity there?

The cavity is there to prevent rain crossing from the outside brick work to the inside wall. Instead, water will drain to the bottom of the wall and into the ground.

What can I do if my house has solid walls?

If your property is made of stone or built prior to 1930 and as a result has solid walls, you can have solid wall insulation rendered to the internal walls of your home which will retail heat as well as improve the appearance of your home. For further information, see our solid wall insulation service.

How much will it cost to have my cavity wall insulation done?

Currently, everyone qualifies for a government grant contribution to the cost of their cavity wall insulation and is a fixed price of £199.00 up to 80 square meters. Should your property exceed the square meters available on the grant scheme, the cost for each additional meter is £6.00.

How is the wall insulation installed?

Holes are drilled into the external walls through the mortar joint and are generally 22-25mm diameter in size.

How are the holes filled?

The installer will fill all the injection holes with mortar to match the existing colour and texture as close as possible. On pebbledash finishes, pebbles will be applied to the surface to match the existing finish. Once the exterior walls become to weather, the holes will be unrecognisable.

Does the insulation come with a guarantee?

All Cavity Wall Insulation installed by ourselves will come with a CIGA guarantee. Once the work is completed, we will submit the guarantee application to CIGA which you will receive in within a matter of days. For further information about CIGA, please click here.

I live in a semi-detached property. How do I stop the insulation going next door?

Our installer will insert a cavity barrier at the party wall line. This is usually a length of bristle brush. If your neighbour would like the work done at the same time, the cavity barrier would not be needed and they simply need to give us a call to see what they qualify for.

Loft Queries

What is loft insulation?

Loft insulation is a method of stopping up to 25% of heat loss escaping through the roof in your ceiling.

How much loft insulation is required to stop heat escaping?

The current government standard of loft insulation as defined by the British Building Regulations Council is 270mm of loft material. If it has been over 10 years since you had your loft insulated, you may well need a top up of material to bring your home up to current regulation standards.

What if my loft is partially or fully boarded?
If your loft is partially or fully boarded, we will require your permission to lift the boards in order to lay the insulation material or alternatively we can insulated on top of the boards to ensure the correct amount of material is installed.

What if I am unable to clear the loft myself?

We do require all lofts to be cleared prior to installation, however should you be unable to clear the loft yourself, our installer’s can do this for you at an extra charge to cover labour costs.

How much will it cost to have my loft insulated?

The cost of insulation is dependant on the size of your property, for example a 3 bedroom semi detached house would normally cost £480 inclusive of labour and VAT. However our Warm North scheme supported by the government grant initiative allows you to have your loft insulated at a subsidised fixed rate of £199 inc. VAT.

How is the loft insulation installed?

The loft material will be laid in a quilt format as shown here. Alternatively, if the loft hatch is too small to access by one of our installer’s, the loft material can be blown into the loft space.

Draught Proofing Queries

What is draught proofing?

Draught proofing is another insulation method that decreases the amount of cold air entering your home. Materials can come in the form of brushes, foam and sealant strips that can be applied to your doors and windows to prevent draughts and heat escaping from your home.

Other Queries

How much can I expect to save on my utility bills?

If you have your loft and cavity wall insulated where the majority of heat escapes from your home, you can expect to save £1 in every £3. For example, if your heating bills are £1000 per year, you can expect to save approximately £333 per year in utility costs.

Will my home be warmer?

An un-insulated home can expect to lose the following amount of heat through various sections of the house:-

Cavity Wall: 35%
Loft: 25%
Windows: 10%
Doors: 15%
Floor: 15%

By insulating the above areas of your home, will retain the heat previously lost making your home warmer as well as saving money on your heating bills.

How long does the work take?

For 3-4 bedroom properties, the loft and cavity wall work should take approximately 2 hours. For larger properties, this will take longer. Our qualified surveyors will be able to give you a more accurate time at the time of inspection.

Is there much mess?

There is very little mess following installation. All debris from brick dust or excess material will be cleared on site by one of our installers. If in doubt, please read our testimonials page where previous customers have left comments.

How do I know the existing ventilation will continue to work following installation?

Our surveyor will investigate all ventilators to ensure they are sleeved. If any ventilators are not sleeved, our installer will remove them and seal around them to stop them being blocked by insulation. Other redundant vents will be closed off and redundant airbricks may be filled.

How long will the insulation last?

The BBA certify that the insulation will last the life of the building. A 25 years CIGA guarantee will be supplied to all properties that have had cavity wall insulation installed.
